WHO AM I?
My name is Jason. I was born in Scotland and now spend my time split between Toronto and Dallas. I was born with a degenerative eye condition known as Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP for short), which slowly deteriorates my vision with time until there is nothing left. Because of this I felt a strong connection to the world of sound and so I pursued a life of music. I have been incredibly fortunate in this pursuit and have worked with all kinds of amazing individuals from game developers to musical bands and beyond.
After a decade of writing music as Aether I found myself enticed by other musical and non-musical creative ideas and so I delved deeper into these curiosities.
DRIFTER – The first of these ideas was to write music that reminded me of growing up. I grew up in the 90s and 00s so most of my childhood was spent playing Gameboy and Playstation1/2 titles, a lot of which featured drum and bass music. Fast paced jungle was heard throughout a lot of games I grew up on, such as Ape Escape and Need for Speed, so in efforts to transport myself back to simpler times, I created DRIFTER to experiment with the music of my youth.
GUIDANCE – On the topic of my youth, I was also raised on hip-hop and electronic music, however Aether is primarily electronic, so I thought I’d try my hands at hip-hop. This has been an extremely rewarding journey because as a beat maker, the music is never complete until there’s vocals, so every project is a collaboration with exciting people and meaningful stories.
INDIE DEV – The final project, and the one that’s taken up the most time by far, is my pursuit in game development. Having scored a variety of award winning indie games, I wanted to try create something special of my own.
